Key to Success

It’s a 7 letter word. It comes in all shapes and sizes. Sometimes it’s easy to come by, sometimes it seems almost impossible. It is usually accompanied by a physical reaction such as a smile, tears of joy, dancing a jig, a fist pump high in the air, etc. It’s the ultimate confidence builder, and it can be quite contagious to those around you, driving them to set their own goals to achieve. But the one thing it always does is that it leaves you with a feeling of accomplishment.

Now that probably sounds like a cheap knock-off of Merriam-Webster, but the truth is that the definition of “success” is created by you yourself. To some it can be as small as cleaning the garage or learning how to bake a pie, to others it could be as large as making millions of dollars or turning your private business into a major corporation. It can be personal goals such as quitting smoking, losing 30 pounds, or getting a college degree. In the end, success is exactly what you want it to be.

There are no rules for how to be successful, but if I had to give some general statements of how I feel about it, here’s a few:

-Make a plan: Know where you are now, know where you want to be, and find the best way to get from point A to point B. And having a backup plan in case something goes wrong isn’t a bad idea either.

-Don’t judge your success by others: This is your dream, you set the bar as high or low as you want to. Don’t let other people be a catalyst for what you’re wanting to achieve.

-Expect some roadblocks, but don’t stop the mission: We’ve all heard it all our lives, “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again”. Don’t let some hiccups along the way keep you from reaching the finish line.

-It’s your dream, but there are others in it: Give consideration to the other people in your life who might be affected by the goals you set, because they could be making sacrifices too. Don’t lose sight of the prize, but know that there are others that are a part of your journey.

-Reach your goals, then set new ones: Once you’ve found your success, enjoy it, but don’t let that keep you from continuing to aim higher and do more!
