“There are only 2 kinds of music, good & bad…”-unknown
What a profound statement! If only it was a true statement…. there really is only one kind of music and that’s just “music”. People are so opinionated about what it is they love and hate about all kinds of music:
“It makes me bob my head and tap my feet”
“The lyrics are stupid and make no sense”
“The lead singer is so hot in those skinny jeans”
“I HATE the sound of a B3 organ!”
All these comments (as shallow as some may be) are real critiques that I’ve heard from real people about why they like or dislike certain songs, musicians, styles, etc. So for those of us who are very passionate about making our art and exposing our heart & soul through our music, this can be very uplifting or devastating, possibly causing us to compromise our artistic license. And some of the most hurtful opinions can come from we the musicians! I’d never tell you that forming an opinion about something is a bad thing, we should all strive to find our individuality and know what works for us. But never belittle someone’s art just because it’s not your thing, especially if you are a musician!
Now I’ll be the first to admit that I’m very guilty of being opinionated, and it may come off as being mean or egotistical, although I would never want to. But I don’t apologize for having my views, even though they may not be shared by others. I make it a point to respect all my fellow musicians, songwriters, & producers no matter what I personally think of what it is that they do. As musicians, we can only do what we do as good as we can do it and try to find the audience that will love it. But above all, you have to do it because you love it.
So be proud of all your endeavors and journeys, and give some thought to the others who are traveling too. Whether or not you dig what they're preaching, just know they're on the same search as you are, but may be taking a different road…
