Key Passion

I had a teacher in high school who made us write a letter to ourselves (long before Brad Paisley did lol) and 10 years later she mailed these letters back to us (or our parents in my case). The assignment was to write something about your future dreams, aspirations, goals, etc., and then in 10 years you would receive the letter and you could compare what you wanted then & where you are today. For some of my peers those dreams were left behind to chase other dreams or to deal with life as it changed around them. Others may not have known at the time what road would lie ahead or what they wanted to accomplish. For me, it was simple; I knew music was my path since I was 11 years old. I guess you could say I didn’t choose music, it chose me.

So its been almost 10 years since my dad called me and said “Son, we just got a letter for you in the mail, looks like it’s from you…” I had forgotten all about the assignment, and wondered what it was that was waiting for me (anthrax was a bit of a threat at the time, just like WMDs and global warming lol). So to my surprise, I open the letter and this is what it said:

Dear Kevin,

This is you when you were 17. I hope you’re doing well and that life has been good to you. I don’t know if you’re married or still single, but above all I hope you’re making a living playing music and working in a studio all the time.

So funny how innocent I was at 17, but I still had my road set out before me. I’m happy to say that I’ve been blessed to make a living playing music worldwide and work in many of the best studios in Nashville and Austin. And the dream still lives on, I’m more excited than ever to be a part of the creative process of music! Everything from writing, singing, playing, and producing records still lights my fire, and collaboration with other talented folks is the sweetest thing of all! I thank God everyday for my journey, even the harder times, because they make me appreciate the good times, and here’s to more good times to come!
